Bible Study Groups Launch in Malawi

"But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).

In years past, we’ve seen revival meetings take place in Malawi during which the Gospel is preached, people repent from their sin and receive Jesus as their Lord & Savior… but then those meetings end without any follow-up. Rarely are steps taken afterwards to ensure new believers are building their faith on the Word of God to help them progress towards maturity in Christ. So in the absence of spiritual bread, these new believers return to sinful behaviors. Evangelism without follow-up is like giving birth to a child but then not nurturing the child to help them grow into a healthy adult.

Reaching The Hungry does not miss this critical step. We believe every new believer should be spiritually nurtured.

So the RTH Malawi team assigns new believers to Bible Study Groups (BSG) and provides Bible lessons to guide believers on their journey with Christ. Putting members into small groups paves the way for them to get to know one another and fellowship together. This is especially important since here in Malawi, many Christians can be attached to their denominations, not to God. Reaching The Hungry fosters Bible Study Group environments that allow everyone to feel comfortable to share & contribute during conversation — despite certain denominations.

Bible Study Groups Launch in Malawi

On October 9th, 2023, the RTH Malawi team organized a Bible Study Groups Launch that launched FIVE new Bible Study Groups in the area of Senior Group Village Headman Bwatha1 T/A Mtema, Lilongwe District, Malawi.

Here's a glimpse at how the RTH Malawi team worked together to make this Bible Study Groups Launch happen: First, Daniel (RTH Malawi Partner) opened with a word of prayer and announcements. Next, Joshua (RTH Malawi Staff) taught about worship. Then, Donnex (RTH Malawi Staff) led the Bible study. Finally, I served as the Director of Ceremony. Also, our team created an illustration that provided attendees with tips on how to conduct their Bible Study Groups. After forming the groups, we granted authority to participants to choose their own Study Group Leaders and provided Bibles to those leaders. With the standard of life and financial status in remote areas of Malawi, it is very difficult for one to buy a Bible on their own so these Bibles were a blessing to them from Reaching The Hungry. It was wonderful to hear shouts of joy as the groups watched their leaders receive them.

Breakthroughs Throughout The Launch

Over 80 people attended our Bible Study Groups Launch. We were also excited to have two Senior Group Village Heads (Bwatha1 and Bwatha2), as well as several other Village Heads from all around, join us for the ceremony. Here in Malawi, most traditional cultures go against Biblical principles — and the custodians of culture are chiefs. Once a chief is transformed, it becomes much easier to reach an entire community for Christ. So when Group Village Head Bwatha1 gave a speech during the ceremony, that opened the door for the RTH Malawi team to serve in her area. In her speech, the village head thanked Reaching The Hungry for gifting the Bibles, as well as mentioned that it was the first time in her regime she had seen such a function.

Not only did our team launch new Bible Study Groups, we also saw several new souls come to Christ. Praise God! We bless the name of the Lord for the success of this Bible Study Groups Launch. "Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits" (Psalms 103:2).
